Did you know that you can often alleviate negative emotions or physical discomfort by tapping on specific points on your body?
This straightforward self-help technique, technically known as Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or more simply, Tapping, has garnered significant attention for its effectiveness in regulating emotions and relieving stress. There are over 100 studies supporting this with evidence. Recent research covered in Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine revealed that practicing tapping resulted in a significant decrease in participants' emotional states and physiological markers. The results included decline in anxiety (−40%), depression (−35%), post-traumatic stress disorder (−32%), pain (−57%), cravings (−74%) and cortisol (−37%).
An introduction to Tapping
Tapping leverages the body's electrical nature. You've probably experienced a similar effect, positive or negative, accidentally countless times in your life. Think of the effect that touching a hot stove as it sends an electric impulse along your nerves to your brain. In a similar but positive manner, tapping on specific energy points (meridians) stimulates the smooth flow of energy throughout the body. When negative emotions become stuck, these energy pathways can become clogged, leading to discomfort or distress. By tapping on these points, we send small and controlled-intensity shock waves that help to release blockages and restore balance.
Here is a simple step-by-step guide to tapping:
STEP 1
Identify the issue you want to address and rate its intensity on a scale of 1 to 10.
STEP 2
Begin tapping on the side of your hand (pressure point 1) while repeating an affirmation that acknowledges the issue: "Even though [your issue goes here e.g. I'm anxious], I deeply love and accept myself." Repeat this affirmation three times.
STEP 3
Tap on each of the remaining pressure points, repeating the issue (e.g. I'm anxious). These points are (see image below):
Pressure points are at both sides of the body so you can choose whether you’d like to tap on the right, left side or mix it.
STEP 4
After tapping on all points, take a deep breath, Reassess the intensity of the issue on the same 1-10 scale.
STEP 5
Repeat the process until the intensity diminishes.
When Can You Apply Tapping?
Tapping can be used for relief from a variety of issues, including physical pain such as headaches and high blood pressure, as well as emotional distress such as anxiety, fear, anger, depression, and phobias.
